Many of us are creative beings — we earn our living and find our happiness making things. Nevertheless, we find ourselves drawn beyond the experiences of the the city and towards a closer connection with the natural world.

WAX Magazine is a new print publication about art, culture and surfing in and around New York City. The bi-annual publication, conceived of and edited by graphic designers David Yun and Zak Klauck, and writer Aeriel Brown, will feature art work by prominent New York artists who share a connection through the surfing community.

I am happy to be collaborating with them on the project, which will launch in May 2012.

For myself, a city dweller who was raised amidst farmland, surfing is a conscious act of mental and physical realignment. The same is true for others. The beach is the line where the built environment joins nature, where our constructed reality intersects with and becomes subservient to its predecessor, the barren earth. On shore, many of us are creative beings — we earn our living and find our happiness making things. Nevertheless, we find ourselves drawn beyond the experiences of the the city and towards a closer connection with the natural world; we are not content to merely walk along the shore, to dip our toes in the water and watch the sun set on our creations. Instead, we apply our creativity to the art of play. We surf. Turning our backs on land, we wade into the depths to explore thrill of the ocean, a swirling fusion of warmth, coldness and unrelenting energy. When we return to land, we may feel bruised, spent and useless, but we are energized, inspired, and most of all, impatient for more.

This is, in a sense, where WAX Magazine begins. In this strangely harmonious intersection of city, nature and humankind, WAX explores ways to “create pathways of cultural creativity both on and off the breaks.”

To begin carving these pathways, though, we need your help. Please consider backing WAX on Kickstarter. This financial support goes a long way in making the magazine a reality. There you can also view our video, pre-order Issue #1 and purchase exclusive artwork from our contributors. Bonus: totebags!

If you run a blog, or know someone who does, email us and we will send you a press pack.

Thank you for your support. Great things are to come, and we have you to thank for it.
